This study measures psychological strengths in individuals with recurrent depression, their coping strategies, and their perceptions of the usefulness of strengths assessment as a component of psychological assessment. Individuals (N =112) with recurrent depression completed an online questionnaire measuring strengths. A subset (n =10) comple… Show more

“…The context of therapy is already supportive and therapists develop a rapport with their clients, making it easier to introduce elements of positive psychotherapy sensitively as ways of increasing the tools that individuals have to support them in their illness. Certainly, patients with chronic recurrent depression reported that character strengths assessment would be a very welcome addition to their treatment, feeling that it provided them with additional resources for coping when they became ill again and it also improved their self-concept to be able to conceptualize themselves as people with strengths [ 29 ].…”

“…For instance, one study demonstrated that both negative and positive aspects of state forgiveness are predictive (negatively and positively, respectively) of happiness across multiple measures (Maltby, Day, & Barber, 2005). Finally, one study found that self-forgiveness was related to more adaptive scores on a depression-to-happiness scale, suggesting that either they were happier, less susceptible to depression, or both (Macaskill, 2012a). “…This is also reflected in the World Health Organization (WHO) definition of mental health: “ mental health is a state of well‐being in which the individual realizes his or her abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community ” (World Health Organization, ). There is a growing number of studies that demonstrate that patients appreciate well‐being as an important outcome of treatment (e.g., De Vos et al., ; Macaskill, ; Zimmerman et al., ) and several meta‐analyses have shown that it is possible to promote well‐being in clinical populations (Bolier et al., ; Sin & Lyubomirsky, ; Weiss, Westerhof, & Bohlmeijer, ). The current study is one of the first to address a comprehensive model of well‐being and its relation to psychopathology in a mental health setting.…”
