Brain Network Organization During Mindful Acceptance of Emotions

Abstract: Individuals use various strategies to cope with challenging emotions such as anxiety. Mindful acceptance involves broadening attentional scope and fully experiencing present moment sensory feelings (whether pleasant or unpleasant) without judgment or elaboration. In contrast, narrativeevaluation involves focusing on a narrow band of sensory experience and generating an elaborate narrative about the meaning and desirability of one's emotional feelings. “…Dereification can be viewed in the dual mode of self-reference as the shift from narrative focus to experiential focus (Farb et al, 2007). In addition, the acceptance stance is to enhance greater accuracy in perceiving mental contents instead of suppressing the content of mental experience (Dixon et al, 2020). As patients with mood disorders were found to be more active in the DMN than controls that are related to poor mental health, this non-reactive attitude targets to combat the automatic constraints to turn to negative valence during mind-wandering (Broyd et al, 2009).…”

“…According to Table 6 and as shown in Figure 6, the Anxiety and Depression scores of the client were significantly reduced from 10 to 3 and 8 to 2, respectively. According to Dixon [29], the acceptance stance helps to improve greater accuracy in the perception of mental contents rather than suppressing the content of the mental experience. This helps in the reduction of anxiety and depression-related symptoms as well.…”

“…Emotional acceptance may have operated with the mechanism of limiting habitual emotional reactions, and it helped the participants disengage from irrational thoughts, judgments or defense mechanisms. As a result, it created more cognitive resources and mental space for the participants to develop insights and allow positive reappraisals of stressful situations (Dixon et al, 2020).…”
