Compulsive sexual behavior: Prefrontal and limbic volume and interactions

Abstract: BackgroundCompulsive sexual behaviors (CSB) are relatively common and associated with significant personal and social dysfunction. The underlying neurobiology is still poorly understood. The present study examines brain volumes and resting state functional connectivity in CSB compared with matched healthy volunteers (HV).MethodsStructural MRI (MPRAGE) data were collected in 92 subjects (23 CSB males and 69 age‐matched male HV) and analyzed using voxel‐based morphometry. Resting state functional MRI data using … Show more

“…Our results suggest that a common feature of CSBD and behavioral (PG) and substance (AUD) addictions lower GMV in frontal pole -subregion of prefrontal cortex (PFC) implicated in cognitive control [51], [52], [35] and cognitive processing [53], [54], [55]. Reduction of GMVs in frontopolar cortex was previously found in AUD and GD [21], [27], [18], [15].…”

“…show lower GMVs in the right caudate [34]. Using a region of interest analyses of GMVs focusing on the left and right amygdala, left and right ventral striatum and anterior cingulate, GMV in the left amygdala was found to be increased in CSBD patients compared with matched HCs [35]. Here we studied GMVs in individuals with CSBD, AUD, GD or none of the disorders (HCs).…”

“…LID may result from pre‐ and postsynaptic changes in the dorsal striatum following pulsatile chronic LD treatment, whereas ICDs could be the consequence of dopaminergic overstimulation of the limbic/ventral striatum . Neuroimaging studies have revealed discrete functional and receptor changes associated with LID and ICDs in the striatal regions . However, because dopamine replacement therapy produces stimulation of both D1 and D2 receptors in the motor striatum and D2/D3 receptors in the limbic‐ventral striatum, this could explain the coexistence of both mechanisms in some patients .…”

“…[16][17][18][19][20] Neuroimaging studies have revealed discrete functional and receptor changes associated with LID and ICDs in the striatal regions. [21][22][23] However, because dopamine replacement therapy produces stimulation of both D1 and D2 receptors in the motor striatum and D2/D3 receptors in the limbic-ventral striatum, this could explain the coexistence of both mechanisms in some patients. 14,24 Interestingly, D3 receptors have been involved in the pathogenesis of ICD, 7 and their expression correlates with the severity of levodopa-induced dyskinesia.…”
