Sleep deprivation alters functioning within the neural network underlying the covert orienting of attention

Abstract: One function of spatial attention is to enable goal-directed interactions with the environment through the allocation of neural resources to motivationally relevant parts of space. Studies have shown that responses are enhanced when spatial attention is predictively biased towards locations where significant events are expected to occur. Previous studies suggest that the ability to bias attention predictively is related to posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) activation (Small et al., 2003). Sleep deprivation (SD)… Show more

“…Further, the mindfulness scales were correlated with the depression scale. Also when considering the actual discussion concerning fMRI correlation analyses (Mander et al, 2008) and fMRI in general (Kriegeskorte et al, 2009), and that a priori formed anatomical ROIs would have be an even better basis for correlations, the principles of the presented approach have been approved to be fine (Herwig et al, 2007b;Mander et al, 2008).…”

“…This reduced ability to focus limited mental resources on salient information and tasks at a given moment can take several forms, specifically the impairment of sustained Doran et al, 2001;Tomasi et al, 2009), selective Horowitz et al, 2003;Mander et al, 2008) and divided attention (Drummond et al, 2001).…”

“…The reduced ability to direct limited mental resources to process salient information at a given moment can take several forms, specifically the impairment of sustained (Doran et al, 2001; Chee et al, 2008; Tomasi et al, 2009), selective (Horowitz et al, 2003; Mander et al, 2008; Chee et al, 2010; Lim et al, 2010) or divided attention (Drummond et al, 2001). Behavioural impairment in SD can manifest in reduced performance accuracy, slower responses, greater variability in response time and an increase in non-responses (Doran et al, 2001; Lim and Dinges, 2010)…”
