The effect of enteral tube feeding in cystic fibrosis: A registry based study

Abstract: ETF introduction improved BMI z-score and stabilized FEV1, associated with less hospitalizations and IVAB treatments. Higher mortality and transplantation in the ETF cases, leading to drop-outs, made determination of the effect size difficult.

“…Enteral tube feeding (ETF) is widely used to improve nutritional status in CF, but long‐term outcomes are not well characterized. A retrospective, longitudinal registry–based study from Belgium evaluated the clinical course of patients with CF pre‐ and post‐ ETF (n = 113), comparing each patient with 2 age‐, sex‐, pancreatic status‐, and genotype class–matched controls . At baseline, the ETF group had a worse BMI z ‐score (ETF median, −1.5 (IQR, −2.4 ‐ −.7) versus control median, −.4 (−1.1 ‐ .2); P < .0001) and FEV1 percent predicted (ETF median, 51.4 (32.7‐73.1) vs control median, 82.7 (65.6‐94.3) P < .0001) in the index year.…”
